The Brandtannery Launch was super fun last night. So many people that I’ve been meaning to catch up with, all in one room! PLUS… delicious drinks, and a very cool space.
Loved being on the panel with Dan and AJ Mueller, and being able to call up Mike from Property Guys to talk a little about his story too. Here’s me being serious.
We were talking about “Aha!” moments… that second where it clicked in your brain that you were on the right path and really ON TO SOMETHING. My thoughts were a little disjointed, as I had just come off a really intense convo with Jamie, Obersun and P about … the meaning of life. So apologies, if I wasn’t very fluid in my comments! haaha.
Here’s Amy!
And here are some lovely edibles. PJ, you rule.
Hope everyone had fun!
There’s lots more pics over here on the Brandtannery FB!

If you like magazines, and you particularly like responsible, and locally crafted magazines, you might want to check out this deal on Groupon today:
Alternatives Journal - 1 year subscription (that’s 6 issues) for only $16!
What a ridiculously awesome deal.
First published in 1971, Alternatives Journal ’s editors pack six issues per year with environmental analysis aimed at fostering community action, which helped garner the publication an Utne Independent Press Awards nomination in 2011. Readers discover ideas on how humanity can reach a more sustainable future, or glue googly eyes to the kitchen clock and debate the latest eco-news from Canada and around the world. Pages flip to features crafted by some of the nation’s foremost eco-friendly wordsmiths, and past contributors have included Green Party leader Elizabeth May as well as author and activist Naomi Klein. Each edition stuffs mailboxes with both informative and engaging brain feasts, such as articles on the food system, environmental education, and the inherent relationship between musicians and the environment. Housed at the University of Waterloo, Alternatives Journal’s publication pros fact-check each of their written creations before bundling them up in knitted wool sweaters and sending them out for peer review.
You should think about it, but not for too long, deal is good for today only. 40 years in publishing. that is badass.
Happy Reading!

So, the Maple Leaf/Schneider’s Plant in Kitchener is closing down… Record Article HERE.
Mixed feelings from me….
Totally sucks ass 1200 people will lose their jobs – but let’s be honest, the stuff I hear about working there is definitely suboptimal… and some times nearing death and dismemberment.
It’s not like it’s the old JM Schneider Sausage plant anymore.
However….
Totally rules that our neighbourhood will stop smelling like poor little burning piglet…. although don’t get me wrong, i love bacon like woah… except when i burn the SHIT out of my hand while making it…. as per the other week… i digress.
Maybe this will encourage more people to check out awesome places like The Poultry Place, Well Fed Farms/Oakridge and The Markets….
I hope we can find a sustainable industry to transition those workers into…
But that’s just my optimistic hippie heart speaking.
Anyone have any ideas?

So, on Tuesday, Karl of Cute Gecko and I did a marketing workshop for the farm community on behalf of FoodLink! It was so fun and you can read ALL about it HERE. There was video – but it all must have been rubbish, because there’s none on the cute gecko blog ;)
hahahaa, this is Karl and I getting our tech fix before we dive in to talk marketing with Old Order Mennonites, for those of you that aren’t familiar with the term – that’s the type of Mennonite that drives a buggy and doesn’t have the internet… or electricity.
AND THEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We got invited out to Stewart’s farm to check out his Greenhouse and almost ready Tomatoes! I was kind of stressed about this – because my emails were piling up and i was LOSING it! ahaha but, once we got out there I was SO INTO IT. OMG! I love horses and cows! THEY’RE THE CUTEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stewart – who allowed me to photograph him :) – and his ride.

Just bringing the hybrid home.
Ok. So I had a great time. It was so awesome checking out Stewart’s farm. I highly recommend you go and see where food actually comes from, because that shit is CARAZY.
Thanks FoodLink and Cute Gecko for the wicked opportunity.

As I’ve mentioned, I attended this event put on by the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre a few years ago - and it was really interesting.
Met lots of great people – which was definitely the highlight. Here’s the lowdown on this Saturday’s event… it’s not too late to register – and check out ALL the familiar faces that’ll be presenting some great sessions. If you do something creative – and hope to sell it/make money/apply for grants/have anyone hear about it – you should spend the $49 to check this out:
You can register HERE.
I know, I know, you’re sick of hearing about this event from me, but too bad.
The event last night was great – 300 people, good snacks and interesting speakers.
One of them was Stephen of Enermodal. Seriously, if you haven’t heard of these guys, check’em out. Doing amazing work with LEED certified buildings across Canada… and reducing their company’s carbon footprint with some really cool initiatives for their employees.
That leads me to this: one of the reasons that the companies cite when they explain why they work with SW is… employee satisfaction/engagement/retention.
Man, how true is it that young people feel more compelled to work at/for a company that actually gives a shit about the environment? SO. TRUE.
If you’d like a play-by-play of last night, check out my twitter (@angrycelery) and to view the Sustainable Waterloo 1 year annual report, Go HERE.
Nice work friends at SW, very excited to work with you over the coming months.
