As I’ve mentioned, I attended this event put on by the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre a few years ago  - and it was really interesting.

Met lots of great people – which was definitely the highlight. Here’s the lowdown on this Saturday’s event… it’s not too late to register – and check out ALL the familiar faces that’ll be presenting some great sessions. If you do something creative – and hope to sell it/make money/apply for grants/have anyone hear about it – you should spend the $49 to check this out:

    You can register HERE.

Holy. Busiest 2 days ever.  I am sorry readers… I wish I would have posted this yesterday. wah-wah.

Yesterday, I was at the Venture 4 Change (Social Entrepreneurship) event, as you know… and it was FANTASTIC and yes, the all caps ARE definitely necessary.

Capacity Waterloo, and specifically Jennifer King, did a killer job pulling together relevant and engaging speakers, as well as pulling it all off without a single issue. Every speaking slot was accompanied by some sort of group discussion and let this be a lesson to anyone organizing anything – if you don’t engage the people listening, you will lose them.

Personal highlight was connecting with local people whose work I have only admired from afar, it was great to be interacting with them in an environment that was 100% welcoming. And then there were the usual suspects ;)

Beautiful day to be out at Whistle Bear golf club in Cambridge… omg i’m sooo badass.

Jerry Greenfield (co-founder of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream) was the keynote speaker and was soooooooo interesting. I mean, he’s got a great story to work with – but he really makes you live it, ya know? It’s kind of felt like an Uncle that you’re parents have told you a ton about, but you’d never really met – and then he comes to dinner and he is everything that you imagined he would be.

… and he brought you ice cream.

COME ON. How great is this picture?

Ok, so I’m not going to go on and on and on about it… there’s lots of places you can check out for a lot more details/recaps/photos/tweets:

I will say, that Ramy (thanks for the photos) made a great point – he hopes that by the year 2020, there will be no need for the term “Social Enterprise” – every business will measure their triple bottom line, and every customer will demand that the companies they engage with care about the social impact of whatever it is that they do.

I think that says it all, yes?

I know, I know, you’re sick of hearing about this event from me, but too bad.

The event last night was great – 300 people, good snacks and interesting speakers.

One of them was Stephen of Enermodal. Seriously, if you haven’t heard of these guys, check’em out. Doing amazing work with LEED certified buildings across Canada… and reducing their company’s carbon footprint with some really cool initiatives for their employees.

That leads me to this: one of the reasons that the companies cite when they explain why they work with SW is… employee satisfaction/engagement/retention.

Man, how true is it that young people feel more compelled to work at/for a company that actually gives a shit about the environment? SO. TRUE.

If you’d like a play-by-play of last night, check out my twitter (@angrycelery) and to view the Sustainable Waterloo 1 year annual report, Go HERE.

Nice work friends at SW, very excited to work with you over the coming months.

Here’s a great video of her being interviewed by Natalie of She Takes on the World at the TEDxWaterloo event in February.

How funny is the word “Vlog”? it’s even more ridiculous than “blog”

Regardless, this is kind of cool to check out – I’m beginning to love how Caroline and Erb is starting to build up. Or at least it’s growing on me.

Seems like a natural fit, doesn’t it? With all the innovation in the air? or so we say….

Dragon’s Den is coming to KW to do some open auditions on Monday, March 22nd from 11 am – 6 pm at the Centre for Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology, Accelerator Building, UW Research & Technology Park, 295 Hagey Blvd. on the 2nd Floor, Suite 240 (please use the north entrance facing Sybase).

No experience is necessary – hopefuls just have to be ready to pitch their business in under five minutes. If you can convince producers you’re ready for the limelight, you could be invited to face Dragons when the upcoming season is filmed in Toronto.

SLIGHTLY COOL IMPROVEMENT TO THE SHOW: As extra incentive this year – entrepreneurs with an eco-friendly business, invention or idea could qualify for a $100,000 Greenvention prize from Sun Chips. (WTF? Sun Chips? OH! because of their new “eco friendly” bag? sounds like green-washing to me.)

If you’re interested in auditioning, apply online  HERE and bring the completed application form to the auditions.
