Well, it’s the last day of Movember and to celebrate all the moustaches out there, I’m happy to announce that the Read What YOU Wrote as a Child event raised $225.00 for the Stache to the Future Team!

Great Moustache-Growing ladies and gents… mostly gents, but good show ladies!

Thanks so much to everyone who came out on Nov 18, and shared an awesome night for a good cause :D

And I cannot encourage all you dudes out there that it’s more about just having an excuse to grow weird and normally socially-unacceptable facial hair,  it’s about having a healthy prostate, Men! – so book an appt, get your junk checked out, and don’t be a little bitch about it. Women everywhere ask for you to have functioning twigs and berries for decades to come.

Till next year mustachmio men,

H.

PS! I ALSO HAVE 5 SETS OF FREE TIX FOR THE MOVEMBER BALL – HAPPENING THURSDAY, 8PM THE MUSEUM! LEMME KNOW IF YOU WANT A PAIR! LEAVE A COMMENT!

Bet you never thought you’d see THAT headline on RQ! Didja?!?

Alright – last night’s Women of the Year event was kind of a bust, I knew like 8 nominees and none of them won. Bummer… next year ladies, next year.

Some of you might have seen my tweet about Lorna van Mossel – wicked 87 year old that won the lifetime achievement award. Seriously – this woman has kicked some serious ass over the past 80 years. If you google her (which i’m sure any 87 year old would REALLY appreciate) you’ll find that she was a citizenship court judge – helping newcomers to Canada and giving them the hand up they needed to get started when moving here. Incredible. Possibly the best line she said during her lovely, humble and honest acceptance speech was something like – i don’t feel like it was hard work to help, i just saw something (a problem) in front of me and did what was necessary.

That’s the way it should be, shouldn’t it? We all lighten the load because everyone helps solve the problems/challenges in front of them? Instead of ignoring someone, we help them out? Instead of chucking our old stuff on the curb, we find a better home for it. When we go to the grocery store, we buy some extra things for the foodbank bin that is RIGHT. THERE.

Right?

ANYWAYS – very closely related to that, in my mind, was the keynote speaker. A woman who a year after retiring developed a lung disease and needed a double lung transplant. After much waiting and uncertainty and an induced coma that lasted weeks, Carol received 2 lungs and she lives. Really lives. Because she was up close and personal with the thing that is the opposite of living. All because someone & and their loved ones, decided to donate some lungs.

She mentioned that every 3 days someone dies because there are not enough donated organs.

WTF. we bury people and their (pre-death perfectly fine) parts in the ground, when their organs and tissue could help other people survive? well that’s just effed, if you ask me.

So over lunch today, started doing a little research (kind of lost my appetite, but it was worth it) and I’m intrigued. I’m curious why more people aren’t donating their organs and tissue… Religion? Not wanting to admit they’ll die one day? Being immersed in all the other crap we’re bombarded with and not really thinking about it?

If it is Religion (some religions believe you’ve gotta go back into the ground the way you were brought in…. all possible organs intact, no piercings, no tattoos, etc…), I would assume there’s going to be a change in this chart over the next 10 years… but if it isn’t, I’m curious what the issue IS.

Chart from Trillium Gift of Life Network site
Are you a Registered Organ Donor?

If yes, tell me about what you thought when you made the choice.

If Not, would you consider posting a comment to tell me why?

All opinions, commentary and editorializing appreciated :D

(Thanks to those that spoke up on Twitter earlier today)

AND… if by chance you would like to become a Registered Organ and/or Tissue Donor – and save up to 8 people and make up a whole lot of people’s lives better, Go HERE. It seems pretty easy.

… when i read THIS blogpost in my Reader, I thought I would summarize for you if you need a quick pick-me-up- i know it’s a random and an un-RQ-like post, but between this shit weather and the shit election results – we need to cling to the little things, ya know?

The Happiness Project: 7 things you can do to be happier IN THE NEXT HOUR

1. Energy Boost! Get up and pace while you chat on the phone, take a quick jaunt around your block or building.

2. Connect with Friends – send a “Hi, i was thinking of you text or bbm”

3. Just DO that nagging task – get it off the list, it’s not that bad.

4. Clear some physical and mental space around where you’re working.

5. Plan some fun for the future – what’s up tonight, Art Hunt on Wed maybe?

6. Do a Good Deed – always good advice.

7. Act Happy – you know, fake it til ya make it and all that good stuff ;)

(Check out the complete and much more robust list at The Happiness Project Blog – thanks EMILY M!)

Alright. It’s not rocket science, but it helps. I’ve done 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 and am feeling much less shitty :)

Good luck Friends!

And, if that didnt help. maybe this encouraging spring note from NatalieDee will:

Mar 11

So, on Feb 17, I was at We Day in Kitchener. If you don’t already know – We Day is an amazing 1 day event hosted by Free the Children – a Canadian turned Global organization for ending the cycles of poverty and slavery in the world. We Day is focused on engaging kids and young adults on social change – and how they can make a difference.

It is an INCREDIBLY inspiring event – and I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to attend through work, because space for adults was definitely limited.

One of the speakers was Rev. Jesse Jackson – who, I know, people have mixed feelings about – BUT: what was interesting about his talk was that he asked questions like this:

“Please stand up if you know if any of your peers have tried drugs once” – def. 3/4 of the audience stands.

“Please stand up if you know if any of your peers take drugs regularly” – around 1/2 the audience stands.

and… then… most disturbing:

“Please stand up if you know if any of your peers have thought of committing suicide”

OVER HALF OF THE AUDIENCE STOOD UP.

Which leads me to this… we have got to get kids feeling more empowered, supported and cared for. There needs to be an outlet for these feelings, and we have got to start talking more openly about children’s mental health.

Which leads me to THIS:

A friend of mine is working with Children’s Mental Health Ontario on an amazing event for a great cause called ‘Change the View’.

Young adults ages 13-25 are invited to make a video that shows how we can all take the stigma out of kids¹ mental health issues like stress, depression, eating disorders, ADHD, bullying and schizophrenia. The winning video will be announced on May 6th at the Masonic Temple in Toronto (MTV headquarters). The winner gets $2000 and the runner ups win some awesome prize packs from Etnies, Dragon, Matix and Arts & Crafts!

Ashley Greco, Zach Werner and Sarah Taylor will be the celebrity judges and co hosts – with more celebs to be announced closer to the event. Not to mention free admission, free food and door prizes.

Please visit: Kidsmentalhealth.ca – to get more info. If you know someone who should enter this contest, PLEASE pass this on – and let’s start talking about this stuff, ok?

Love you all,

H.

Dec 01

Alright, after a slight scare with a downed website yesterday, i’d like to celebrate being back online with THIS.

It is now December 1st, and i don’t want to see any of you out there with moustaches. It’s enough already… shave that shit off.

And… as @Melle pointed out – go get a prostate exam.

Pretty cool awareness program happening in Cambridge to expose the realities of food insecurity in our Region:

A couple of high profile residents, including the YMCA Director of Community Outreach, will be living off a food bank food hamper and free meal programs in the city –  and sharing their experiences online. You can read the full article on the Cambridge Times HERE.

And here’s the link to the blog where participants will be blogging.

Food insecurity is a huge issue in our community – that I find completely disturbing. Waterloo Region has so much wealth, development, innovation and passionate residents – HOW do we also have so many families going hungry?

As some of you know – Last year, RQ did a food bank fundraiser where I asked for readers to bring their Beer, Wine and Liquor Empties into Seven Shores Café and we returned them for cash which we gave to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region. And YOU, get a free coffee.

This campaign was SUPER SUCCESSFUL and RQ Readers donated over $300 in cash and 189 lbs in food. AMAZING.

My ideal goal for this year, would be to double that amount of money – think we can do it, Friends??

YES WE CAN.

Start saving your empties!!!!

Well, the long weekend is over and it’s full speed ahead into the Fall.

Orientation Week, change in the wind, elections and a whole lot of awesomeness going on in KW over the next couple months.

Speaking of the upcoming elections: A couple weekends ago, M82 and lovely Cara stayed with us for a short but sweet visit, while some frantic ironing was happening, we got into a pretty interesting chat about Fluoridation – a hot topic in Waterloo at the moment – and Mike (who does work on this sort of thing) was kind enough to write up this quick overview on the topic for us.

Enjoy, and feel free to post questions.

___________________________________________-

Over the past decade, water quality has become a greater concern for Ontarians. The (in)famous and tragic wake-up call occurred in May 2000 in Walkerton, where the public groundwater supply became contaminated with one of the few toxic strains of E. coli (0157:H7). Farm runoff from an intense storm impacted nearby municipal wells that were known to be vulnerable to surface contamination. This event resulted in at least seven deaths and 2,500 illnesses.
Although contaminants like E. coli are of significant concern to public administrators and water users alike, other water quality issues have received their fair share of attention. A prime example is the fluoridation of municipal water. Health units, researchers, and government bodies (including Health Canada) support water fluoridation, citing that the introduction of water fluoridation has resulted in improved dental health across the world (fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay and cavities).

Ontario drinking water engineers regularly monitor the concentration of fluoride in their source water, as many parts of Ontario experience high levels of naturally-occurring fluoride in their water supply. This is due to the dissolution of local minerals in bedrock or soil where groundwater is extracted. Anthropogenic sources of fluoride contamination do exist but are less common. Other jurisdictions which have low levels of fluoride fluoridate their water at treatment plants before it is distributed to users. Both Ontario and the World Health Organization have a Maximum Acceptable Concentration of 1.5 mg/L of fluoride in drinking water.

Although large government and scientific institutions continue to support fluoridation, significant opposition from the public and members of the scientific community has formed around the issue. Comprehensive studies from Canada (Locker, 1999), the U.S. (Yiamouyiannis, 1990), and New Zealand (Colquhoun, 1998) showed no significant differences in dental health between fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. Western European countries have vocally opposed fluoridation and have experienced the same decline in dental decay as North America. Some studies have proposed many reasons why dental decay has decreased in non-fluoridated communities since the 1930s. They include the tremendous increase in nutrition and fresh fruit and vegetable consumption assisted by the introduction of household refrigerators. Cheese consumption has also greatly increased, which is known to have anti-decay properties (Colquhoun, 1998).

Even more interestingly, where fluoridation has been discontinued in communities from Canada, Germany, Cuba and Finland, dental decay has not increased but has actually decreased (Maupome 2001; Kunzel and Fischer,1997,2000; Kunzel 2000 and Seppa 2000). Other research indicates that the benefits of fluoride are much greater if they are applied topically (using toothpaste with fluoride to brush directly on your teeth) rather than systemically (drinking fluoridated water and spread throughout the body). This could make swallowing fluoride unnecessary and potentially harmful, increasing the risk of dental and skeletal fluorosis especially in young children.

So where does this leave us?

Questioned research from the original fluoridation studies in the mid 19th century, potentially better dental health in non-fluoridated areas, increasingly mixed opinions between the medical orthodoxy and new research, continued support from U.S. and Canadian health agencies, and the likelihood that all of fluoride’s benefits could simply come from your Colgate or Crest rather than your kitchen tap.

Mind the paranoid hysteria and Orwellian politics online, but educate yourself. Even as a water nerd, there are some big flashing signs to seriously question business as usual. Get on your boots.

And some top Google Search results for your consideration:

http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv/environ/fluor-eng.php – Health Canada “Fluoride and Human Health” document

http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/pub/ministry_reports/fluoridation/fluor.pdf – Benefits and Risks of Water Fluoridation. Please note the authors do not address topical vs systemic application of fluoride which can significantly impact its benefits and risks.

http://www.fluoride-journal.com/98-31-2/312103.htm – an article about New Zealand’s chief dental health official and why he changed his mind on water fluoridation

http://www.fluoridealert.org/50-reasons.htm – 50 reasons to oppose fluoride. At first I dismissed this “Fluoride Action Network”, but the list of researchers which are members of the network is compelling.

WOW. Last night I skipped Cinq a Sept to check out “The Art of Being” a Yoga workshop put on by KW|AG and Queen St. Yoga.

I was pretty stressed walking up Queen Street to the gallery – things are a little nutters in my life right now (in a good way) – there’s a ton happening at work, and a HUGE RQ event in the works. Details on Monday i hope! Anyways, the to-do list is out of control and so the idea of trying to chill and meditate seemed like a bit of quality time i may not have had to work with.

I WAS WRONG.

This 2 hour session was unreal!

Meaghan from Queen St. Yoga is awesome, just as a starting point, and you combine that with Kirstie from KW|AG  and how can you go wrong??? The first hour was a lot of relaxation and muscle meditation and traditional yoga stretches. All good times, and much needed.

The second part was more mind/body spiritual and tied in really amazingly to the third part – a silent, self guided viewing of both current exhibits inside the gallery. SO AWESOME. You HAVE NO IDEA what you are missing when you view art in a crowded and noisy space! You miss EVERYTHING! Not to get all righteous on you or anything, but honestly – this was a massively enlightening experience for me. hahaha.

(As an aside, you only have 2 more weeks or so to see the Kissick, Mary Catherine Newcomb & Grand River Installations… i highly suggest you get over there ASAP)

So yes, The Art of Being was awesome, you should look for the next one, or email the gallery and tell them that you’re so sorry you missed the first one and will they please do another one asap because you need a 2 hour reality check that involves amazing art and wicked people and some weird squash fetuses.

Look at how lovely we are!

Thank you so much Meaghan :)

PS. I heard Cinq a Sept was pretty boss too ;)

The city is hoping to work on these parking structures in fall of 2010.

Good Stuff! Now we just need a bike borrowing system like Montreal and we’ll be good to go!

I just got off the phone with a dude from Doctors Without Borders…

They’re following up with people that made donations immediately after the earthquake in Haiti.

We all know that the need for relief doesn’t just stop after the devastation leaves the front page of the papers, and there is an ongoing need for money, food, first aid long after the hype dies down.

We’ve signed up for their monthly donation program. They start as low as $7.50/per month – which provides 2 meals every day for a month to a child threatened by famine.

For $15/month… they can provide a month of clean water for 40 refugees.

$30/month – A surgical kit containing essential instruments to carry out emergency examinations and basic surgery in the field

and $60/month – A month of nursing care for refugees from war or natural disaster

Seriously? How can you NOT sign up for this? Spare yourself 2 lattes a month and you’ve fed a kid for 30 days.

Call. Sign Up. Leave a comment.

This is important. Start your weekend right.

There’s a lot of things that Entrepreneurs and Artists have in common.

They’re both creative,
they’re both driven, independent, focused, in most cases stubborn (I said it. Deal with it.) and…
in most cases, neither have benefits to hit up the dentist for a regular cleaning.
That’s why I thought some of you might find this offer interesting:
$30.00 Dental Cleaning
by a student at the Medix School in Kitchener
(they train people to be health care professionals like massage therapists, dental hygienists and pharmacy assistants, etc.).
If you’re interested, you can contact Ashley at
ashleyshantz (at) yahoo (dot) ca,
she’s offering the deal until May 2010.
She had an ad up at the Working Centre. Smart girl.
