Ok. Couple great things I want to tell you about:

1. Conestoga College is airing a Community Message ad about a scam going on with people renting rooms/apts  - and laid out how the scam works, what you can expect to get via email and best practices for avoiding getting involved in it. Amazing. This is an awesome service a community station can provide. It makes me happy when my ears just aren’t violated by brutal djs and ads. Good job guys!

2. One Book, One Community. Awesome program that encourages everyone in the Region to read the same book and then join a book club, or check out an event with the author. Last year was “Best Laid Plans” by Terry Fallis – AWESOME book, wicked Dude. He read at Word on the Street and it was great. This year:

Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny.

Order it from WordsWorth Now!!

And 3. KW|AG New Music Night on Saturday. 9pm-Midnight, Tix are $12.

Programming by David Jensenius and Ian Newton, hosted by Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery in the co|lab space. Each concert features 2, 1 hour performances with an intermission. For more information and artist bios click here>

Gonna be a great night – you should come out!

Obviously, i could think of at least 5 other things that should be on this list – but I have to run to a meeting! Stay tuned.

So, on Feb 17, I was at We Day in Kitchener. If you don’t already know – We Day is an amazing 1 day event hosted by Free the Children – a Canadian turned Global organization for ending the cycles of poverty and slavery in the world. We Day is focused on engaging kids and young adults on social change – and how they can make a difference.

It is an INCREDIBLY inspiring event – and I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to attend through work, because space for adults was definitely limited.

One of the speakers was Rev. Jesse Jackson – who, I know, people have mixed feelings about – BUT: what was interesting about his talk was that he asked questions like this:

“Please stand up if you know if any of your peers have tried drugs once” – def. 3/4 of the audience stands.

“Please stand up if you know if any of your peers take drugs regularly” – around 1/2 the audience stands.

and… then… most disturbing:

“Please stand up if you know if any of your peers have thought of committing suicide”

OVER HALF OF THE AUDIENCE STOOD UP.

Which leads me to this… we have got to get kids feeling more empowered, supported and cared for. There needs to be an outlet for these feelings, and we have got to start talking more openly about children’s mental health.

Which leads me to THIS:

A friend of mine is working with Children’s Mental Health Ontario on an amazing event for a great cause called ‘Change the View’.

Young adults ages 13-25 are invited to make a video that shows how we can all take the stigma out of kids¹ mental health issues like stress, depression, eating disorders, ADHD, bullying and schizophrenia. The winning video will be announced on May 6th at the Masonic Temple in Toronto (MTV headquarters). The winner gets $2000 and the runner ups win some awesome prize packs from Etnies, Dragon, Matix and Arts & Crafts!

Ashley Greco, Zach Werner and Sarah Taylor will be the celebrity judges and co hosts – with more celebs to be announced closer to the event. Not to mention free admission, free food and door prizes.

Please visit: Kidsmentalhealth.ca – to get more info. If you know someone who should enter this contest, PLEASE pass this on – and let’s start talking about this stuff, ok?

Love you all,

Yup, I know that actual reviews are still short in coming, and that makes me a slacker, but I can point you to two film events in the next seven days that might make you all happy.

First, WLU is showing Ingmar Bergman’s Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), one of the few comedies ever made by that master of the austere and nightmarish. The film follows the straightforward plot of a comedy of manners, with a group of aristocrats negotiating their intertwined and dysfunctional love affairs during the course of a weekend spent at an old chateau. Bergman’s signature style is lacking from the film, as are men standing on ceilings, widows dying alone in bedrooms or entire scenes shot only from the neck down. Nevertheless, the film is riot from start to end, and demonstrates that Bergman, in his time, was one of the best screenwriters working in Europe. Underrated, and rarely shown, this films is totally worth checking out if you’re into Bergman or European cinema of the 1950s…or maybe just cinema in general.

If you’re not, you should still keep an eye on Cinematheque Waterloo‘s presentation of Dario Argento’s seminal film, Suspiria (1972), which many people consider to be the most important horror film of the 1970s. Now, I’ve never been the biggest Argento fan, but I will say, not only is Suspiria fun to watch, especially two weeks after Halloween! (ok…that might be a stretch), but this is also a rare opportunity to see it on 35mm. C/W has brought the print out of an archive in the UK, expressly to throw on the big screen the haunting visuals and sensual colours for which the film became famous. The story itself is, to me, more run of the mill, following a gothic formula and focusing on a young female student who is victimized by the staff of a corrupt, occult-ish dance academy somewhere in the middle of Europe. Students die, hijinx ensue…it’s that kind of film. Nevertheless, Suspiria’s visuals will blow you away, and I wouldn’t miss this opportunity to see a film that probably hasn’t been shown in K/W in this format for decades now.

Just got in from a lovely lunchtime visit to media launch event for The Magnetic North Theatre Festival, which is happening in June.

I am so psyched for this 10 day event that is going to take over KW with theatre people from all over Canada… and the world i guess.

How EXCITING is that???

Many more details as we get closer to the event, but I wanted to tell you that they ARE looking for volunteers, and maybe YOU have been looking for a low key way to get involved in the city?

They are looking for people to help out in these areas: (pre-festival) administration, fundraising, helping collate info kits (during festival) front of house, drivers, help with hospitality, transportation dispatch.

Here’s a couple of the benefits of volunteering:

  • An invitation to our opening and closing night parties.
  • One pre-booked, guaranteed seat per 8 hours of volunteer work, with access to all other festival productions and Magnetic Encounters events on a stand-by basis.
  • Magnetic North T-shirt.

If you’re interested, fill out the form on this INFO SITE.

I know, I know, you’re sick of hearing about this event from me, but too bad.

The event last night was great – 300 people, good snacks and interesting speakers.

One of them was Stephen of Enermodal. Seriously, if you haven’t heard of these guys, check’em out. Doing amazing work with LEED certified buildings across Canada… and reducing their company’s carbon footprint with some really cool initiatives for their employees.

That leads me to this: one of the reasons that the companies cite when they explain why they work with SW is… employee satisfaction/engagement/retention.

Man, how true is it that young people feel more compelled to work at/for a company that actually gives a shit about the environment? SO. TRUE.

If you’d like a play-by-play of last night, check out my twitter (@angrycelery) and to view the Sustainable Waterloo 1 year annual report, Go HERE.

Nice work friends at SW, very excited to work with you over the coming months.

This picture is on The Record homepage today. I instantly started craving pancakes with Elmira Maple Syrup on them. mmmmmmmm.

It’s the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival this weekend.

I’ve lived here my whole life and never been. I am hoping that changes this Saturday!

A friend recently introduced me to the music of Peter Katz – a singer songwriter from Toronto, and i am quite taken with him. Sings about doing what you love, and other people’s stories of life. He just seems so sweet and lovely – and talented. So you should probably come out to Maxwell’s in Waterloo on Wednesday to see him.

Doors @ 8:30, opener (who is apparently also great) at 9:00, Peter on 9:45 ish. Tix are $7.

Tons of events again this week…. i love the spring – people leave their house, they stop being jerks on the expressway in the morning, they talk about what they did on the weekend. It’s lovely.

So a couple things you need to know about for this week will be posted over the next couple days.

I KNOW you already know about the Sustainable Waterloo event tomorrow at the Delta in Kitchener – but if you’d like to register last minute, go HERE before 5pm today.

Also – Cinq a Sept on Thursday at 5pm, Bauer Kitchen!
Mark it in your calendar!
