Hit up the Blues Festival on Saturday night!

(we were supposed to go Friday night too – but Curly Blue Cuter Gecko’s birthday party got a little out of control so we didn’t make it!!)

Anyways! Saturday!

This is Dr.John and his band rockin’ it like nobody’s business in Victoria Park!

Soooooooo awesome!!!!!!! And the place was packed!!

Bry, P and I were a few beers in and having a great time! (cant you tell?!?! hahaha we look miserable, i don’t know why – we were really having an awesome night)

and then Bryan made us some fried Catfish – take that you non-existent useless piece of garbage gallbladder!

And then it got dark and we got kicked out of our sweet backstage digs and we went to see Johnny Lang.. who was mildly disappointing – but lots of people were really diggin it and the new and improved downtown was massively full of people… so that was great!

AND! THE CUBE WAS IN FULL FORCE! You can’t tell in this photo … but look how beautiful city hall looks.

As a sidenote, i’ve been noticing that i clench my jaw together whenever I blog lately. What do you think that’s about?

Just know that when i need braces (again) or a frickin’ retainer of some sort, it’s all this blogs fault.

Alright, tea, then bed.

Nite!

The City of Kitchener is showing the work of Felicity Somerset in the Rotunda this month,

you can swing by and have a few snacks and a look at her photography tonight in City Hall.

5-7pm. Slight coflict with Cinq a Sept – but i’ll understand if you bail on me.

….

Also on a less happy city of kitchener note –  slightly annoyed today that the construction crew paving Queen blocked me into my street of 10 minutes this morning and then wouldn’t let me turn right, which tacked a couple extra minutes of drive time onto my trip. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. probably not a huge deal, but in the morning i’m a little over-sensitive to these things.

Would it be sooo hard to drop a little note in the mailboxes of the 6 houses affected by this to say – hey! we’re closing the intersection tomorrow – sorry but there might be some delays?

Would it???

WOULD?IT?

In the wake of the crazy Tannery fiasco, here’s another old factory being converted into something cool:

The Breithaupt Block

Located at King and Breithaupt, it’s aptly named, and the plans look sweet… saying that, maybe i’m a little more jaded on redevelopment than I was a year ago – so let’s see how this pans out before we start saying how great it all is.

Too cynical? I don’t know, i can’t tell anymore.

What do you think of the plans?

PS. couple articles in the Record if you’d like to know more. By Melinda Dalton and an Editorial piece.

I’ve been slacking on the blogo huh peeps?

Sorry… here’s what my weeks been like:

The other day I went to go have a peek around the @TreehausCW Co-Work Space that they share with CTT.

Holy awesomeness Batman, this place is gorgeous, look at the washroom – it’s so cute!

and the kitchen! weirdo braille wall = love.

They had some tasty treats including these hilarious candy kebobs that Bry and I couldn’t resist.

Then last night I was at the UW School of Architecture in Cambridge and there was this giant cyclops eyeball in the foyer. It’s promoting an upcoming event… called The Cyclops. Show is on Friday July 30 and Saturday July 31, 2010. Details are HERE.

And then, my parents picked up their new pup. Ah, hello one of the cutest things ever:

Tonight – CINQ A SEPT!

There’s some drama going on in the Tannery Developments… they’ve been festering for a while now.

James writes a  solid review of what’s happening HERE. I recommend you check it out.

And then I recommend you email Mayor Zehr and ask him to exercise his supreme powers of persuasion to fix the situation…

or not even fix, maybe just slow down the process so the enraged public can get all extra enraged about it and cause a stir.

(Forgive the bitterness, I am now on liquids only – and not the tasty kind – until my organ removal on the 18th)

BUT FUCK. Don’t screw up the Tannery people.

Here’s the link to the 8th episode of The 100! It was a super fun episode for me, since Bryan from Artbar was our guest and we’ve been friends since like… the 90s. whoa!

The main focus of the episode was the cooking classes that are happening at the Kitchener Market! (some links appear to be down, they’re working on it)

I checked out a class a couple weeks ago where Chef Ryan was cookin up some slow-cooked pork shoulder with root vegetables. Oh my god it looked and smelled amazing… however, the fucking gallbladder predicament meant no taste test for me. boooooo.

Here’s a couple pictures from that morning! courtesy of Ramy!

Chef Ryan and Bryan!

Emily smelling some serious Sauerkraut and Gavin giving Ramy the finger?

Ryan working up some amazing smelling root veggies!

Ah YUM. final product.

So here’s the deal. You should check out one of these classes – they’re GREAT.  And… if you would like a deal to try it out, join the Facebook group The Market place at the Kitchener Market and you’ll get:

A) A free Saturday 10:30 am class before the end of the summer

or

B) $15 off an Evening Class – which are a bit more intense – which is usually $35, also valid till end of the summer.

IF YOU WANNA USE THIS DEAL, JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP BEFORE MAY 31.

Ok? Ok.

Happy cooking / eating your delicious creations!

A few thoughts on Ric Young’s “Innovators in Action” talk last night…

First off, this joke was hilarious:

“we are all on this earth to help others

… what the others are here for, hell if I know”

COME ON. So great and pretty much sums it up right there right? Well there were more gems, let me tell you.

Speaking on the topic of innovator in contemplation, rather than action – Ric Young really made you realize we get caught up in the details. If you want to make something happen…. Think about the big picture and work towards that. Realize that lots of people want to change the world and everyone thinks they are changing it for the better. EVERYONE. So work with that information, not against it.

The talk was broken into three sections – the most interesting to me was the first section “ A tale of two wolves” – it was based on this Cherokee parable that Ric told:

One evening an old Cherokee Indian told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, ‘My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all.One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.’

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: ‘Which wolf wins?’

The old Cherokee simply replied, ‘The one you feed.’

COME.ON.

So go forth readers… feed the good wolf.

H.

PS. SIGUW recorded the event, I’ll post the link when it’s available. @renjie also tweeted some of the big ideas from the talk if you want more.  This is part of a series, so if you missed this one, check this link to see which one you can get to.

PPS. It is soooo great when you hear someone (who lectures a lot) give a talk that is new to them. Yeah, it’s a little rambly and rough around the edges, but that’s because they haven’t delivered it a million times! It’s new and fresh. And I think it creates a little spark in the air that you just don’t get when someone has been doing the circuit on the same book for the past 14 months. Yaknow?  Really lovely. Thanks SIGUW and Ric Young. Rock on.

CAFKA is hosting a talk on Thursday of this week at 7pm, held at the KPL.

“spurse” - an open-ended group of individuals and organizations that work towards the development of new forms of engagement, practices and knowledge – will be the guest speaker.

Many of spurse’s projects experiment with the capabilities of existing systems, whether they be urban spaces, garbage, or our ability to listen. spurse has facilitated projects, exhibitions, performances, lectures, seminars and workshops that ask participants to rethink current concepts of knowledge and being.

They’ll be talking about their philosophy and working methods, past projects, current research, and future projects.

The lecture will be followed, on Saturday May 8, by a roundtable session with community stakeholders, intended to facilitate collaboration and inform their upcoming project for CAFKA.

The event is free, contact Rob @ cafka.org if you want more details.

I say 2, because you already know about Cinq a Sept and should already be excited to head to the Bauer Kitchen at 5pm!

But after that – you have 2 excellent options:

1.  You could check out a silent film put to music at the Registry Theatre. The film is the Battleship Potemkin and the music is performed by the VOC Silent Film Harmonic. For more details, go HERE.

2. I’ll be heading to opening of the “The 41″ previously known as Peter Martin’s 20 King in downtown Kitchener. There will be free apps and drinks from 7-9 followed by a cash bar at 9. So yeah, if you wanna come with, drop me a line, leave a comment or just show up at Cinq a Sept and we’ll head from there.

Too bad it’s only Wednesday.

I know, I know, you’re sick of hearing about this event from me, but too bad.

The event last night was great – 300 people, good snacks and interesting speakers.

One of them was Stephen of Enermodal. Seriously, if you haven’t heard of these guys, check’em out. Doing amazing work with LEED certified buildings across Canada… and reducing their company’s carbon footprint with some really cool initiatives for their employees.

That leads me to this: one of the reasons that the companies cite when they explain why they work with SW is… employee satisfaction/engagement/retention.

Man, how true is it that young people feel more compelled to work at/for a company that actually gives a shit about the environment? SO. TRUE.

If you’d like a play-by-play of last night, check out my twitter (@angrycelery) and to view the Sustainable Waterloo 1 year annual report, Go HERE.

Nice work friends at SW, very excited to work with you over the coming months.

Just saw this great request up at REmakeable :

“Canada’s Technology Triangle has recently moved to Downtown Kitchener and they are looking for pieces of art for their walls.

Contact: Robin Martin Robin@techtriangle.com

I love when a company wants to really represent the city it resides in.

Nice work CTT.

You can click on this poster to enlarge it if you’d like.

It’s for The (Children’s) Museum After Dark party – The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.

A fundraiser to support the museum’s operating costs, I am not sure what to tell ya on this one.

I think the poster could be about 1 million times better – and the Lady Gaga impersonator isn’t doing it for me… but, could be interesting.

Thoughts?

Anyone going?

Tix are $30 in advance, $40 at the door.

For many many years, I’ve been fascinated by the North American correctional system. I don’t know why, but I think a lot of people are. (Hence shows like Oz and Prison Break.)

Anyways, Councilwoman Jane Mitchell recently took a tour of the Grand Valley Institute, the women’s penitentiary in Kitchener.
She has a detailed blog post that i recommend you read… here. She talks about the facility and some federal policy changes… do you know that even if an offender is considered a “grave risk” to the community, but they serve their FULL term, they have no supervision once they are released?

I’m not exactly sure where I stand on criminal punishment. I just don’t know enough about how it all works and growing up in whitebread middle class Canadian suburbia sheltered me from having to learn much about the system. (we watched Precious the other night… i have a completely renewed look at my upbringing.)

The recent reporting about 19-year-old inmate Ashley Smith made me start thinking about the Canadian system a little deeper… how did a girl who threw an apple at a postal worker end up in a place like this? And how was she overlooked and denied help until she took her own life? (read more about this important story here.)

This is a BIG issue. I think we’re better than this failing system… what do you think?
Looking forward to your comments, dear readers.
