So!

Last night, RQ got THIS awesome comment on the Bottles for Beans post:

From Roger:

WalterFedy is mounting a team for this tremendous cause. Our communications team rolled it out today !

First of all, How AWESOME is that? and Second, of all – WHY AREN’T YOU AND YOUR COMPANY DOING THE SAME THING?

Good Question, I know.

So here – Let me Challenge YOU, RQ Reader, to rally the troops in your office, and begin collecting your empties as a team for Bottles for Beans 3!

You have until Friday December 9th at 5pm to make a team collection, and arrange a pick up from me.

The largest team donation will receive a very special RQ prize – and possibly some awesome snack delivery closer to the Christmas break.

If you need a copy of the poster as a PDF or hi res jpg, please let me know -

THE CHALLENGE IS ON, PEOPLE.

xoxo,

Just spent an amazing amazing night out at the Conrad Centre with Marc Cameron enjoying the first night of Open Ears Festival in Kitchener!

It was POPULAR STANDARDS featuring members of the KW Symphony and Gregory Oh. Although their rendition of “Born to be Wild’ was pretty incredible. for me the highlight was a performance of the 1985 “Changing Opinion”, from Songs from Liquid Days – and has a pretty cool backstory in the program (the composer collaborated with Paul Simon, Suzanne Vega, David Byrne and others…) Check out the song HERE.

But wait a minute – you’re wondering WTF is Open Ears Festival anyway right?

It’s a biennial Festival of Music and Sound that only happens here… Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

And it celebrates : The Art of Listening

Awesome. KW Awesome.

I HIGHLY recommend you check out their site to see a full listing of installations and events both Free and Paid.

A highlight is The Blue Dot Party which is happening on Saturday night 10pm – sunrise. Tickts available at Pyrus Cafe across from the bus terminal on Charles Street. People talk about this party for MONTHS afterwards, so you need to come check it out with us!
Wanna make a plan to meet up? Message me!

I have been meaning to take a photo of this awesome sign for weeks now!

So thank you VERY much to Insider’s Guide to Waterloo Region for posting it!

I have made up a little story in my head about the person that lives here and made this sign. I am sure it is not even close to the truth… so if you know this person, please let me know. I would LOVE to know the story behind this…

If you, or someone you know, has an awesome project in the works. You should definitely keep reading:

THE KW AWESOME FOUNDATION HAS LAUNCHED!

The KW Awesome Foundation (KWAF) will give away $1,000.00 grants to anyone in the community with an awesome idea for a project or event that needs money to get it off the ground. The Foundation is made up of a board of 10 trustees and 2 non-voting administrators called Deans.

Here’s how it works:

Every other month, the board will hear pitches from community members who have ideas on how they can improve Waterloo Region with an awesome idea. No lengthy deliberations. No business plans or spreadsheets. Non-profit or charitable status not necessary. The board will simply hand $1000 cash to the chosen applicant, empowering them to bring their vision to life. Projects have only one guideline – they must be Awesome.

KWAF is looking forward to funding projects that will contribute positively to the Waterloo Region and that likely would not happen without a jumpstart. With over a dozen submissions already received, the foundation is off to a great start and looking forward to launching the first project and granting cycle next month.

Originating in Boston, the Awesome Foundation has spread worldwide, with groups in London, Sydney, San Francisco, Berlin, Toronto and Ottawa.

If you want to get some more info, or submit a request for some awesome funding. Go HERE.

So exciting!

A little while ago, the lovely Kirstie started the blog Cherries on Top.

It is awesome and you should definitely put it on your blog-reading to do list.

I’m particularly loving her recent post on Art Exhibition listings in Waterloo Region.

So have a read, leave her a comment and check out some of this awesomeness around town!

Last night was our first attempt at ROULETTE – a little thing Ramy and I thought would be hilarious…. and we were RIGHT.

How does it work?

About 30 people packed into the Princess Cafe and got a few drinks… each attendee (who was willing) put there name onto a spinning wheel.

At 8:15, we got started. Basically, spin the wheel – land on a name – that person comes up to the front and presents a presentation slide deck that they have never seen before. Topics ranged from politics to pokemon and it was HILARIOUS.

Here’s a breakdown on our wicked speakers:

  1. Brock  on the origins of expressions – did they originate from the bible, nautical terms or glassblowing? A+ for audience participation on this one FOR SURE.
  2. Darryl W on “Climate Change – and why Green Energy is the Devil” – this one went somewhere i was NOT expecting, awesome!
  3. Cory on Fish. This one included a Q&A period at the end and Cory SANG! This guys some serious balls.
  4. Patrick on Famous Inventors – a hot chick who invented the Spread Spectrum Radio in a “chemise” and the dude that invented the Super Soaker.
  5. Gavin F (as my political puppet) talking about Amalgamation of KW. AWESOME use of the slides! Thanks for doing it justice G!
  6. Jessalyn on “Why Humpty Dumpty Got What He/She Deserved”  and gender roles in society.
  7. Gord on Shift Happens – a classic slideshare presentation… have you seen it?
  8. Adam & Tudor  presented their inventions in Unique modes of Transportation. My fav – the MegaBoat.
  9. Christine on Urinal Etiquette – a newcomer to the crowd – she was a showstopper. Handled the term “stallpisser” quite well.
  10. Matt talked about… well… we’re not quite sure… but it was hilarious watching him try and figure it out while drinking 2 beers at a time.
  11. Marty on the Top 10 Best Pokemans and why. A tech lawyer talking about Pokemon for 3.5 minutes – how can you go wrong?  Best part was that he started it off with a little bit of pacing and contemplation complete with glasses-arm-biting.
  12. Emily R – A great closer! The 7 Wonders of Canada. OMG. HILARIOUS. Did the whole things with a straight face, and some pointed comments on the use of the #KWAWESOME hashtag.

All speakers got a prize – and Gavin and Emily were awarded with free drinks for top talks.

Thank you so much to everyone that came out – you all rule.  I’m almost certain that I know the funniest people in KW.

We raised about $250 for Movember and are looking to doing something new and exciting in November.

Were you there? Post your thoughts!

Stay Tuned!
