How was your weekend?

Mine was busy but AWESOME! Saturday early afternoon, the Nu Berlin crowd checked out “Homage” one of the highly recommended shows in Magnetic North – it was Pay What You Can and packed. It was at the Conrad Centre, but actually in the “theatre in the round” which is a downstairs. It was a GREAT show and I LOVE that it was based on a true story from Windsor. man, life sigh.

After Homage, we hit up the KW Art Gallery for “HOME SWEET HOME” – a very cool interactive exhibit where a city grid is laid out complete with streets, street lamps, all kinds of zoned houses/businesses and a canal. You purchase a little cardboard home for a few bucks and decorate the shit out of it – lay it down on your little plot and start interacting with your neighbours.

You can send letters to city council, get an announcement played over the local radio station which is live in that gallery or have a party – which will be happening tonight at 6pm!

Here’s some pics of “McGoo’s Pub” that P and I crafted:

We had some public art for the front yard created by @bymarty:

We have some great neighbours – Cap’n Brunch by Dana and Marty:

and Cute Gecko Acoustic Cafe :

And for a little bit of idea of scale:

What a good time!!!

There’s still time to check this out and even to make a little house or biz of your own!

Come by tonight!

Wow. Seeing one ‘Must See” thing in a week is pretty impressive, but seeing 2 is pretty rare.

Last night, thanks to John and Rebecca, I saw NORMAN – a performance honouring the work of Canadian Animator and Filmmaker Norman McLaren.

This is an unbelievably cool piece of art that YOU HAVE TO SEE. I’m not even kidding. YOU HAVE TO SEE IT.

It is way ahead of it’s time and really offers something for everyone. (i’m not just saying that – McLaren’s films were easy to watch and pretty abstract in most cases, so they’re easy to watch – a lot of them focus on motion of humans and animals – and the technological element is a lure for anyone more scientific who thinks they don’t like theatre.)

Yes, it is still Theatre – which is not for everyone, but the way they use projection and image and film is 100% captivating for anyone.

Basically – there’s projections of McLaren’s short films, and a dude dancing WITH the images, as part of the films. They go together like PB and J, You would almost think that McLaren knew this would happen – although he died in the 80s – like he knew his work would be used in this way and so created it to fit. But he didn’t. And i think that’s what makes it all so fascinating to watch.

Here’s a short vid of one of the scenes. Check it out, and then buy your HALF PRICE TICKETS for Tonight or Tomorrow’s show at Centre in the Square.

ENTER PROMO CODE: NORMAN

Call the Ticket Centre at 519-578-1570

Show starts at 7pm, and you’re not allowed in after it starts (i think because the theatre is kept very dark to see the projects properly) so get there early.

If you do one thing this weekend, this should be it.

PS. I hear some pics of this show are coming my way later today – will post when i get them if you need anymore convincing.

UPDATE: Check out these photos from Kevin Hansen – then go see the show.

So Magnetic North’s opening show of “Mump and Smoot: Cracked” was INSANE. Like, possibly certifiable. If you like the weird – check out this show FOR SURE.

Tonight there’s a 2 for 1 offer to see “Norman” a tribute to Norman McLaren, canadian artist.

To take advantage of the deal – Use code 061050 at this link: http://ow.ly/1WJIt

Looks like a pretty cool show, you can watch the Youtube vid to get a feel for what you’d be seeing. NORMAN

Pics to come tomorrow!

Tonight is the opening night for the Magnetic North Festival and I’ll be checking out the Opening Show at UW’s Theatre of the Arts.

We’ll be seeing Moot & Smoot: Cracked i believe.

aka the deranged clowns that everyone’s been talking about. There is blood in the show. NOT for Children.

Then we’ll be heading to the Festival Bar at the Museum. oh boy… it’s going to be a late one.

PS. Stay tuned later this week for a special episode of the 100 dedicated just to Magnetic North – we had Kris and Anne on the show and they were LOVELY.

It’s been a while in the making, but the Magnetic North Theatre Festival is happening this month.

Starting June 9 – and running everyday until the 19th… there’s a ton of events, parties, shows and activity all over town. There’s gotta be SOMETHING you’d like to check out.

You can check out the full Magnetic North site HERE, but on to make things easy for you.

Nu Berlin is going to be attending a show on Saturday. here’s the details.

The Show is HOMAGE.

It’s about : An advertising executive takes a risk, leaves his job and tries his hand at art. His first commission: a public sculpture for a town’s central square, a monumental installation inspired by Stonehenge and built out of red Canadian cedar. Thirty years later, he has become one of the country’s most successful public sculptors and his work is featured in textbooks on Canadian art. Yet, as his health fails and he is left with an uncertain prognosis, the town decides to demolish his seminal work.

When? Saturday June 12, 2pm.  But, get there at 1pm.

Where? Conrad Centre for the Performing Arts  - beside the children’s museum.

How Much? Well, we know you’re a little bit scared of theatre, so it’s Pay What You Can to get into the show. Saying that. We can’t guarantee we’ll get it, so let’s get there at 1pm and get a seat.

Go HERE And RSVP.

Thanks! See you Saturday!

Just got in from a lovely lunchtime visit to media launch event for The Magnetic North Theatre Festival, which is happening in June.

I am so psyched for this 10 day event that is going to take over KW with theatre people from all over Canada… and the world i guess.

How EXCITING is that???

Many more details as we get closer to the event, but I wanted to tell you that they ARE looking for volunteers, and maybe YOU have been looking for a low key way to get involved in the city?

They are looking for people to help out in these areas: (pre-festival) administration, fundraising, helping collate info kits (during festival) front of house, drivers, help with hospitality, transportation dispatch.

Here’s a couple of the benefits of volunteering:

  • An invitation to our opening and closing night parties.
  • One pre-booked, guaranteed seat per 8 hours of volunteer work, with access to all other festival productions and Magnetic Encounters events on a stand-by basis.
  • Magnetic North T-shirt.

If you’re interested, fill out the form on this INFO SITE.
