Nice work Boathouse Supporters!

http://www.therecord.com/news/local/article/603777–city-council-backs-plan-for-boathouse

UPDATE: Word on the street / facebook is that there’s a recommendation going to council that they back off and keep the Boathosue open,  Terry Pender’s got a story in the Record tomorrow on it…  check it out.

___________________________________________________-

Heard that the meeting earlier this week (tuesday) was packed full of Boathouse supporters and there was lots of dialogue – if you’d like to support the Boathouse, or just want to be  a spectator – the issue of the Boathouse being closed is on the agenda for Monday’s City of Kitchener Council Meeting.

7pm, Council Chambers – You can download an agenda HERE.

The Facebook group is still going strong – there’s more details there.

I’ve had SO SO SO many interesting conversations with people on this issue over the week – will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I’m guessing that if you come here, you want mind being subjected to my personal opinion – this is a BLOG after all –  but i’m gonna hold off on it until after I attend the council meeting – stay tuned for Tuesday. hahaha.

As always, if you’ve got a thought on this – please post it in the comments – then you can make and share your point! Cool? Cool.

Allo – it’s 1:28pm. (Go here for my post from earlier today)

Just wanted to give you a quick update:

City of Kitchener staff is working on putting together some details for Council.

Council is most likely holding off on answering media requests until after they’ve been briefed… that might be later on today. I’m expecting to hear something back after 6pm today. Fingers crossed. sidenote – hahaha. media request from RQ. yeah for local blogs!

I personally think this is a good sign -

Toes crossed too.

So, I’m trying to get all the facts on this Boathouse situation…

Looks like a public information session (about the lake dredging & improvements) is happening :

Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Downtown Community Centre at 35B Weber St. W

This has NOTHING to do with these current Boathouse talks – and is engineering staff…. purely dredging and restoration plans. Also very important… but not the hot button of the day. I’m not sure there’s much point in using it as a place to make a stand.

There’s a lot of confusion on this FB support page – and I’ve called Councillor Etherington’s office to get some facts. Spoke with staff there, and he’s giving me a shout back. I’ll put some details up as soon as I have them.

In the meantime – let’s not all get our panties in a knot. There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and Councillor Etherington has NO problem with the Boathouse, or the sounds that it gives off. He’s quoted, and his staff backs up “I am not aware of any abundance of complaints,”

SO. What am i saying here….

The Boathouse is an amazing and essential venue in Kitchener. Possibly THE MOST essential venue in Kitchener, as it puts us on the map for many talented and hard to attract musical acts, and it’s a place that local musicians call home, and make our Region more vibrant for playing there (don’t believe me? go here)- many use it as a first or last stop on tours that take them across this country of ours… plus… it has amazing fries… and heritage. And we can’t lose it.

But i am also saying – let’s just see what the situation is – before we freak out.

Post your stories about how much you love the place, the first time you played there, the first time you wished you were a musician while watching someone up on stage, the first time you sat on the patio and watched the swans… let’s be prepared for the worst, but hope for the best?

More updates soon.

PS. I love this pic.

And there’s ANOTHER election, and it’s a pain in the ass to do the research and get out and vote. I know, I know…

So … how about RQ make it a smidge easier, and find out what the Waterloo Region candidates think… and then tell you – and then you can make a slightly more informed decision?

Let me know what you think – and i’ll get on it.

By suggestion of Darcy here, I am asking for Residents of Waterloo who voted NO to discussing the advantages and disadvantages of amalgamation to share their reasons here on RQ.

I am all ears and promise not to retaliate in typical angrycelery fashion (and I would ask the same of my other readers, regardless of how passionate they are about the issue)… I always hear that communication is the key to a better relationship, so let’s see. Let’s not use political speak, no words over 8 letters or so…. let’s keep this simple and in easy to process words.

Why did you vote No?

H.

Wow. That was…. uneventful, for the most part.

As for the Amalgamation Question… I’m frustrated. Where do things go from here?

Any ideas?

According to a couple tweets from the Cultural Mapping, Cultural Planning conference going on in Toronto this week…. the median artist in Canada makes less than $19,000 a year.

Ugh.
I say that this has nothing to do with government funding, working space, available grants or corporate sponsorship… but with the fact that people are not raised to be patrons of the arts.
The average person can’t equate art to value … and what it will bring to their lives, if they just spend a little bit of money to enjoy it. I am not sure how far back this goes… maybe since the first world war? Industrial Revolution? world war II? the Baby Boom? with the decline in religion in the “western” world?
Not sure.
What i do know: it is an easy to solve problem.
GO BUY SOMETHING.
It’s not really that often that I preach that, and I really am not trying to pull a George W Bush move (post 9-11 newscast) but really… you can affect local, national and global artists by just putting a bit of money out there, in the right places.
  • Buy a photograph from a local photographer.
  • Go out and pay the cover charge to see a band play.
  • Check out a show at a small theatre show, even though you’re not sure what to expect.
  • If you see someone busking, reward them monetarily for their contribution to our vibrant society.
  • Appreciate and reward good design, in all aspects of our culture.
  • TEACH YOUR KIDS TO VALUE THE ARTS.
I’m just sayin.
More Action can create Actual change in this area. Let’s take advantage of that.
I’m sure you’ve got an opinion on this one – lemme have it!

PS> Thanks to Emily Robson for letting me know about this event and keeping everyone updated through twitter. check it out.

Ok Waterloo – You’ve been off my radar for a little bit these days. But i just HAVE to bring this up:

This Saturday, to raise money for Haiti, City of Waterloo volunteers will be having a charity….
wait for it…
wait for it…
INDOOR CAR WASH.
I’m not gonna go all crazy on you or anything, because I’m still on a TED high and I am slightly worried that I’m over-reacting, BUT:
A) It’s Winter.
B) IT’S AN EXTREME WASTE OF WATER!!!!!!!!!!!
You’re using up natural resources to clean the first world’s SUVs while people in Haiti are forced to solicit the black market for the foreign aid that isn’t being properly managed into the hands of the needy???????????
Ok. Just sayin’.
Car washes should be $100 fucking dollars because they are so wasteful and unnecessary.
GAWD.
In other news, the City of Waterloo will be giving away Free Hot Chocolate and Chili tonight from 5-7 pm (while quantities last) at Waterloo Public Square to celebrate and thank the donors who made the frozen oval of clean water that we skate on, possible.
Almost positive this contributes to why the developing world hates North America.

Here’s a couple interesting things that have happened in the last 20 hours in KW.

1. Kitchener Council voted to keep Rockway Seniors Centre open and running for the next while.

2. Kitchener Council also voted on letting Andrin Homes develop a chunk of downtown into condos/boutique hotel/parkette thingy. Been in the works for a long time, but now moving forward i guess.

3. Waterloo Council has voted to put the merger question on the ballot for the municipal elections this fall.
And the Library thing happened today, but I gotta say, didn’t make it. Apparently, nothing to report, information-wise…. well, nothing other than the fact that the Library Board should obviously hire a PR company to advise on how to deal with the public. Just sayin.
Last night was great, but LATE. holy.

Just spoke to the library.

Feb 23rd, 7:30am
Main WPL branch on Albert st.
An open meeting for citizens to address the library board regarding the firing of Cathy Matyas. Bring your coffee.

As an aside, the woman I spoke to on the phone jokingly told me to 'bring my friends' … interesting.

See you there, Andrew and Anonymous?
