Wow. remember when i updated this blog? Yeah… me too… sigh!

Just KIDDING! It’s just been a busy week at work! RELAX!!!!!!!!

On to business – do you do one of these things? do you actually want us to not kill the planet? you might want to volunteer your time with Sustainable Waterl00 – they’re making some serious  shit happen. You could be part of it!

Lead Graphic Designer Job Purpose:
The Lead Graphic Designer is responsible for developing the Sustainable Waterloo Region brand and maintaining a consistent visual identity across a diverse range of print and web projects. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop design standards that are communicated through internal and external branding guidelines, style sheets, and other necessary media
  • Review and approve all graphic design work to ensure proper brand representation
  • Provide approvals for external use of the Sustainable Waterloo Region logo
  • Assist with the ongoing graphic design needs of Sustainable Waterloo Region, including the revision and creation of print materials, signage, web design, corporate slide decks, and year-end report

Key Skills Required:

  • Post-secondary education in graphic design or marketing related discipline
  • Solid graphic design experience, with an understanding how to produce designs that meet organizational objectives
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and guidance to creative graphic designers
  • Strong organizational skills

Time commitment: Approximately 4 hrs per week, plus weekly team meeting.

Marketing  Manager Job Purpose:
The Marketing Manager is responsible for the oversight, planning, resourcing and execution of marketing-related projects. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, execute and maintain an annual marketing plan and strategy
  • Manage a team of 5-7 volunteers; including graphic designers, a communications specialist and a marketing resource coordinator
  • Ensure marketing volunteers are engaged and working on projects they enjoy
  • Assign projects requested from other functional areas that require marketing support
  • Provide research and guidance on marketing related issues for internal and external initiatives

Key Skills Required:

  • Post-secondary education in a marketing related discipline
  • Relationship management and project management skills an asset
  • Excels at leading and motivating a team of volunteers
  • Strong organizational skills

Time commitment: Approximately 4 hrs per week, plus weekly team meeting.

Finance Manager Job Purpose: 

The Finance Manager is responsible for providing guidance on day-to-day financial activities within the finance functional area at Sustainable Waterloo Region, oversight of financial record keeping and financial reporting, as well as the strategic planning and budgeting for the organization as a whole.
The Finance Manager supports two volunteers at Sustainable Waterloo Region:

  • Financial Operations Lead
  • Finance Coordinator

The Finance Manager works closely with:

  • Controller
  • Board Treasurer

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Budgeting

  • Development of a static budget for Sustainable Waterloo Region, broken down by quarter/month, on an annual basis.
  • Creation/maintenance of a flexible budget, as required.
  • Tracking of key financial and performance metrics, with a comparison to budget, on a monthly basis.

Financial Record Keeping & Reporting

Responsible for developing tools/processes/systems for tracking financial performance in order to increase day-to-day transparency on Sustainable Waterloo Region’s financial position.

  • Review and sign-off of internal financial statements produced on a quarterly basis.
  • Review of annual financial statements and presentation to Board of Directors.
  • Support the Executive Director in providing budget updates to the Board of Directors.

External Relations

  • Support Finance Operations Lead in maintaining relationships with local bank, the CRA and any other external stakeholders related to Sustainable Waterloo Region’s finances
  • Support the Executive Director and Financial Operations Lead on the preparation and support of the annual audit

Skills needed to be successful in this role:

  • Comprehension of day-to-day financial activities within a small business/NPO
  • Familiarity with financial reporting and accounting standards; specific experience with an NPO is a key asset
  • Understanding of various budgeting concepts and tools for financial modelling
  • Experience with financial modeling in Excel
  • Ability to keep self motivated, while providing guidance and leadership to others
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Passion for environmental issues

Time commitment:

Approximately 6-8 hrs per week (varying with time of year), including weekly team meeting(s) and monthly Finance team conference call.

Hors d’oeuvres will be served and each attendee will receive a copy of Ontario’s Energy Future: A Climate Change Perspective

Experts will discuss the report with an audience of business, community, and political leaders on the importance of energy policy in Ontario. There’s an election coming people – let’s get informed for god’s sake.

Thanks to a recent grant from the City of Kitchener’s Local Environmental Action Fund, Sustainable Waterloo has received funding to hire a contract full-time Business Development Manager position (June 2011 – Sept 2012).

This position will help to grow the Regional Carbon Initiative (with a focus on Kitchener-based organizations) much quicker than originally planned and to scale the overall impact of Sustainable Waterloo – AWESOME!

The next Sustainable Waterloo forum is coming up next week – Tuesday Sept 21 from 7:30-9:30.

You get some breakfast and get to hear about this:

Successful Green Teams inspire employees and get organizations working towards its sustainability objectives. But where do you start? How do you raise awareness? And what kind of programs should you implement? At this educational forum, attendees will learn Green Team implementation strategies featuring an organizational assessment on effective Green Team models from WWF’s Living Planet @ Work program, a Green Team case study by Deloitte and Sustainable Waterloo will debut its Green Teams document.

Tons of events again this week…. i love the spring – people leave their house, they stop being jerks on the expressway in the morning, they talk about what they did on the weekend. It’s lovely.

So a couple things you need to know about for this week will be posted over the next couple days.
