ALRIGHT WATERLOO REGION.

LISTEN UP!

Cheeses Murphy Opens tonight at Midnight! What is Cheeses Murphy, you ask? Fair question.

It’s the late night weekend food option you’ve all been waiting for.

Grilled Cheese, Tomato Soup, Chips… from Midnight til 3:30am on Friday and Saturday Nights.

FINALLY – some good late night eats in uptown.

I am beyond happy for us….

as a Region.

Because late night food options just sucks ass around here (other than Sonny’s! The Best Burgers Ever, Ever…) . But thanks to Marc and The Princess Cafe – things are looking up.

Go by tonight to cheer them on, and take a photo of your drunk self in the photobooth – you’ll probably regret it tomorrow, but whatevs, at least you’ll have a belly full of delicious grilled cheese to focus on.

See you tonight!

PS, I was at the most awesome of awesome talks last night by Cynthia Nikitin from Project for Public Spaces in NYC. It was all about how we make our city more sociable, livable, safe, welcoming and vibrant… for EVERYONE. (Thanks for putting that on Juanita, Sue, Shelley and Team :D )

And in my opinion, Grilled Cheese sandwiches served in the middle of the night on King street is 1 step in the right direction.

PPS. Tell me your favourite late night joints – there’s Sonny’s as i mentioned, and as you know have mixed feelings on Burrito Boys.  I really really really really miss Mel’s. SIGH. Where do you go?

Last night, P and I were generously invited to check out the pre-opening event at The Jazz Room in Uptown! If you don’t know about The Jazz Room … go here to check it out. And become a member.

We met up with these kids, and walked uptown.

The actual home of the Jazz Room is the old strip club inside of The Huether Hotel.  And that old history of women taking their clothes off gives the room a wicked old underground lair type vibe, which is very cool.

Throughout the night different musicians got on stage to give the audience a feel for what will be coming their way after opening night on Septemeber 9th. Oh look! It’s Jason White on a VERY cool old piano.

Makebright was there too!

His post is WAY better than this one (he actually pays attention when taking photos)  so you might want to go over and read that next.

After a few bevvy’s here – P and I headed across King St to Chainsaw to check out the Burlesque vs. Punk show – featuring The Girly Show and The Jinks!

I took a lot of crappy photos… because it was packed and I didn’t want to be in anyone’s way!

Here’s an ok one. YES – that IS a girl with sparklers on her private parts. amazing.

Look  at @whitingdesign! SO BADASS. I love it. So happy we went to go check it out. Also… $10 pitchers of Sleeman’s Chainsaw Lager… ughboy – risky on a thursday.

Then we walked back to the car – and the streets were blocked off and deserted because of Buskers and I took these 2 cool shots:

And then because I’m a firstborn I whined that there were no pictures of me.

Such a great Thursday night. Ok Waterloo, i guess Kitchener  doesn’t have to separate from you after all. Close one.

PS. Remember that storm on Wed?!?! WEIRD!

Jenn Wilson will be sending them out to you soon!

And GO to the next Car Free Sunday event in Uptown – Sept 18!- it’s SOOOOOOOOOOO great!

As some of you might already know, the City of Waterloo (championed by the lovely councilwoman Melissa Durrell) has been shutting down King Street to car traffic once a month this summer.

It’s a chance for pedestrians to enjoy uptown by foot and roam free!

This coming Sunday is the next CAR FREE SUNDAY and RQ Magazine will be hosting a fun little station for dogs!

You’ll be able to come by with your pooch (or your kids, or by yourself for that matter) and get them a delicious treat generously donated by my friends at The Pet Stop (awesome little independently owned pet store on Doon Village Road, i highly suggest you check it out!) , have a drink of water, splash around in a mini-pool, and even have their pic taken by Christine Reid Photography :D

We’ll be posting the pics online later that day, and you’ll be able to download your pooch pics for free :D

So, if you and your pup can play well with others, come on by -

Bring a towel, and a small $2 cash donation for the phototaking… and we’ll see you!

Sunday August 14

11am – 3pm

At the Corner of King and Willis Way in Uptown Waterloo!

Facebook invite is HERE if you’d like to RSVP or leave a comment, or invite others!

Martha and I would LOVE to see you!

Oh Man! We were invited over to Dana and Marty’s for a swanky little Jazz Festival Party on Saturday night.

Here’s some photos… awesome time.

Patio View from the Apt:

I was pretty much obsessed with most of the art in their Apt… specifically these 3 numbers:

An @bymarty Orig:

Highwaisted’s Mom also has some of these homemade book shelves going on around her place in Niagara on the Lake… Love them:

And these little suction buddies are drink markers… please pick your personality:

I picked this guy, obviously:

Then we had our picture taken! With a POLAROID CAMERA for their front hall which has quite the collection of visitor photos:

(still developing, god i love polaroid cameras. how’s hipster of me)

And then there was a lot of:

Dancing…

Drinking…

Music… Carly & Mark at Uptown 21!

And… Skateboarding.

#kwawesome at its finest.

Thanks Dana and Marty for a lovely night!

I know, I know, it’s only Tuesday and it hurts to think about how far it is until the weekend … but it’s such a great one that you need to start planning your itinerary NOW!

Here’s a couple things you might want to check out:

Craft Beer and Ribfest in Victoria Park – the most delicious event of the summer FOR.SURE. All weekend long. We went last year and it was unbelievably tasty. If you’re not into Ribs and Beer, a) you are crazy b) there is bbqd corn and lemonade and rides for kids. This event rules. Hope you’ll be able to make it!

Uptown Jazz Festival – Going on all weekend in Uptown, the Jazz Festival is always a good time. 100% FREE. There’s two stages, one in the Waterloo City Hall Parking lot off Regina and Waterloo Public Square… so get out, have some gelato and listen to some goodness.

If these two events aren’t quite your style… maybe you’d like to check out Summmer Jam at Bingemans on July 17. Totally sold out, but there’s still tix available on Kijji. Busta Rhymes and T-Pain in Kitchener. Amazing. Last year The Roots played – we were going to go, but totally bailed due to a hangover and being broke. Totally regret it now, The Roots are awesome.

The weather should be glorious, there is no excuse for anyone to have a lame-o weekend…. Get out of your house and do SOMETHING!

The city of Waterloo is currently looking into a streetscaping project for uptown, along King from Erb to Central.

I gotta say, i don’t have a lot of complaints around this area. Weird, huh? But i did have a couple suggestions ;)

If you’d like to have your say – fill out this survey before July 30th.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=dtlZexa6iFgGvSCIf8LrmOdpjiJ6iGqfQ5u08wLl9cE%3d&

(The “next” button is at the very bottom, you gotta scroll down.)

Apparently the budget is about 1.7M to get the job done, which is pretty pathetic compared to the Millions and Millions spent recently on downtown ktown… but i think we all know what that is… because there’s no place bitchener than kitchener? Or maybe it’s just because it had a lot further to go on being an acceptable place to hang out.
On that note -why is there so much fucking GARBAGE on the sidewalk and street in downtown…

Dear City, clean that shit up.

Dear Citizens, come on you jerks. put your matter of taste cups in the trash, or better yet, bring your OWN MUG.

H.

PS. Thanks for the heads up Graham W !)
