Pretty cool awareness program happening in Cambridge to expose the realities of food insecurity in our Region:

A couple of high profile residents, including the YMCA Director of Community Outreach, will be living off a food bank food hamper and free meal programs in the city –  and sharing their experiences online. You can read the full article on the Cambridge Times HERE.

And here’s the link to the blog where participants will be blogging.

Food insecurity is a huge issue in our community – that I find completely disturbing. Waterloo Region has so much wealth, development, innovation and passionate residents – HOW do we also have so many families going hungry?

As some of you know – Last year, RQ did a food bank fundraiser where I asked for readers to bring their Beer, Wine and Liquor Empties into Seven Shores Café and we returned them for cash which we gave to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region. And YOU, get a free coffee.

This campaign was SUPER SUCCESSFUL and RQ Readers donated over $300 in cash and 189 lbs in food. AMAZING.

My ideal goal for this year, would be to double that amount of money – think we can do it, Friends??

YES WE CAN.

Start saving your empties!!!!

Wow. Seeing one ‘Must See” thing in a week is pretty impressive, but seeing 2 is pretty rare.

Last night, thanks to John and Rebecca, I saw NORMAN – a performance honouring the work of Canadian Animator and Filmmaker Norman McLaren.

This is an unbelievably cool piece of art that YOU HAVE TO SEE. I’m not even kidding. YOU HAVE TO SEE IT.

It is way ahead of it’s time and really offers something for everyone. (i’m not just saying that – McLaren’s films were easy to watch and pretty abstract in most cases, so they’re easy to watch – a lot of them focus on motion of humans and animals – and the technological element is a lure for anyone more scientific who thinks they don’t like theatre.)

Yes, it is still Theatre – which is not for everyone, but the way they use projection and image and film is 100% captivating for anyone.

Basically – there’s projections of McLaren’s short films, and a dude dancing WITH the images, as part of the films. They go together like PB and J, You would almost think that McLaren knew this would happen – although he died in the 80s – like he knew his work would be used in this way and so created it to fit. But he didn’t. And i think that’s what makes it all so fascinating to watch.

Here’s a short vid of one of the scenes. Check it out, and then buy your HALF PRICE TICKETS for Tonight or Tomorrow’s show at Centre in the Square.

ENTER PROMO CODE: NORMAN

Call the Ticket Centre at 519-578-1570

Show starts at 7pm, and you’re not allowed in after it starts (i think because the theatre is kept very dark to see the projects properly) so get there early.

If you do one thing this weekend, this should be it.

H.

PS. I hear some pics of this show are coming my way later today – will post when i get them if you need anymore convincing.

UPDATE: Check out these photos from Kevin Hansen – then go see the show.

So….. gotta say I’m a little bit excited for Sunday’s KW Arts Awards! I know I shouldn’t be getting all worked up about it, but really, HOW can i NOT? Gowlings sponsors the Literary Award and friend @bymarty is announcing the Winner! So fun!

Last year Gary Kirkham won (shown here) he’s a Playwright and performer and also a member of Lost&Found Theatre, collaborator with the MT Space and the Blyth Festival’s Playwright in Residence. He is the ALSO author of Queen Milli of Galt and Falling: A Wake, which has been optioned for Off Broadway.

I’m up against Pat the Dog Playright Development Centre, Tanis MacDonald (published poet and prof at WLU) and Dennis Yanke (Author of “Love your wife, Get better sex”)…

Anyways…. lol…can’t wait to see how the night plays out!

Keep your fingers crossed for me readers, and think of me on Sunday night!

Thanks friends,

H.

Here’s a LINK to listen to the 12th episode of The 100.

I asked people a bunch of questions about the region at last weekend’s Culture Camp – and P cut it into this 7 minute Gem.

Brock drops the Fbomb multiple times in the first 3 minutes, just to show me up.

Like this format better? Less controlled, more random? Let us know.

H.

PS.  Happy weekend, I hear there’s a bunch of musical stuff happening at the concrete slab tomorrow afternoon.

This new site has popped up on the KW radar today – KW NIGHT OUT.

It’s press release and About Us page boasts that it “is the best Kitchener, ON area website that brings you all of your nightly entertaining needs at the click of a mouse.” – but it looks like it stills needs a lot of it’s content generated… so….

That’s all I’ll say about that.

Exciting Exciting! I was nominated for a KW Arts Award in the LITERARY category!

The big show is June 6th at the Centre in the Square and tix are $22 if you wanted to come and see me lose to an actually legitimate author. Saying that, I really cobbled together the best of the best for my submission – so maybe… maybe…..

I can’t wait! whoo hoo! The anticipation is killing me.

H.

Cross your fingers and toes for me, lovely readers!

Hey All,

We’re releasing Episode 10 of The 100 early this week, since we’re talking about The Tannery District and there’s some stuff happening tonight.

Have a listen to the podcast by going to HERE or checking it out in iTunes (The 100 Waterloo)

If you’d like to get involved with raising public interest or showing your support for the District – feel free to action one or more of these options:

1. JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP…
And ask your friends to do it too.

2. Work your network. Spread the word, join the conversation. Specifically on WEDNESDAY MAY 19 – Let’s make the Tannery a trending topic in Canada!

“Cadan and City of Kitchener, let’s turn the Tannery into a true district for people.”

Hashtag for twitter #TANNERY

3. Come to the City Council Meeting tonight – 7pm – You don’t even have to speak, just putting butts in the seats will show our support of City council making the right choices :)

I know that all this stuff can seem a bit preachy, or like it’s just talking to a wall, but it REALLY doesn’t have to be.

It’s pretty easy for the public to band together and show they disapprove of something – and it gives a loud and clear signal to the people that make the decisions that they are headed in a direction that may not be what the community wants.

I’ll be there tonight.

Holy. Busiest 2 days ever.  I am sorry readers… I wish I would have posted this yesterday. wah-wah.

Yesterday, I was at the Venture 4 Change (Social Entrepreneurship) event, as you know… and it was FANTASTIC and yes, the all caps ARE definitely necessary.

Capacity Waterloo, and specifically Jennifer King, did a killer job pulling together relevant and engaging speakers, as well as pulling it all off without a single issue. Every speaking slot was accompanied by some sort of group discussion and let this be a lesson to anyone organizing anything – if you don’t engage the people listening, you will lose them.

Personal highlight was connecting with local people whose work I have only admired from afar, it was great to be interacting with them in an environment that was 100% welcoming. And then there were the usual suspects ;)

Beautiful day to be out at Whistle Bear golf club in Cambridge… omg i’m sooo badass.

Jerry Greenfield (co-founder of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream) was the keynote speaker and was soooooooo interesting. I mean, he’s got a great story to work with – but he really makes you live it, ya know? It’s kind of felt like an Uncle that you’re parents have told you a ton about, but you’d never really met – and then he comes to dinner and he is everything that you imagined he would be.

… and he brought you ice cream.

COME ON. How great is this picture?

Ok, so I’m not going to go on and on and on about it… there’s lots of places you can check out for a lot more details/recaps/photos/tweets:

I will say, that Ramy (thanks for the photos) made a great point – he hopes that by the year 2020, there will be no need for the term “Social Enterprise” – every business will measure their triple bottom line, and every customer will demand that the companies they engage with care about the social impact of whatever it is that they do.

I think that says it all, yes?

Sunshine Chen captured the second episode of The 100 on film!
You can check it out here, if you can’t get enough of us.

If you’re sick of us, don’t go HERE!

You know an event is going to be really really good when EVERYONE is talking about it.
I’ve received more than 5 different emails from 5 different (and unrelated) contacts asking me if I’ve heard about the Venture 4 Change event and today Twitter is abuzz with it too!

EVERYONE!
COME TO THE VENTURE 4 CHANGE EVENT
ON MARCH 29th!

It’s going to be great. Organizer Jennifer King was on The 100 this week talking about the event, so have a listen to that,
or check out their site HERE.

Ben and Jerry’s Co-founder, Jerry Greenfield is the main speaker.
But there are many more speakers and people you should meet if you are AT ALL interested in anything and if you do ANYTHING AT ALL in the world.

We all need to be concerned with helping social change along… so I don’t really give a shit if you run a fortune 500 or you’re a goddamn stay-at-home parent.
Find a sitter and come out to this event.

Ok? Ok.

It’s $149.00. Register HERE.
See you on the 29th.
