You can do that you know?  change your mind.

I haven’t been a fan of it in the past, but in my wise old age, I’m coming around to it.

Which is why, I was happy to read this news last night:

The City of Waterloo will be providing a one-time grant to the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery following the organization’s release of its new sustainability plan.

“The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery is a cultural cornerstone in our community. Investing in the gallery is an investment in arts and culture in Waterloo,” said David Smith, the city’s general manager of Community, Culture and Recreation Services.

“Not only does this national gallery attract visitors to the uptown, but it’s also increasingly becoming a destination that’s frequented by residents. With its new sustainability plan in hand, the gallery is positioned to continue to provide this service to our community.”

The gallery had requested $70,000 in funding, but the city opted to provide a one-time grant of $51,150. City staff will continue to work with the gallery to ensure this funding is used to further its new sustainability plan. This plan includes reworking its board structure and governance model, demonstrating financial accountability and improving accessibility for the community.

This is your chance CCGG – You can do great things. You have amazing people on your side wanting to make you a popular, accessible and cool spot. Seize it.

There is absolutely nothing in the world that I like better than email from people that read RQ.

Seriously, the rush it gives me is comparable to what i feel like it would be like to do heroine for the first time.

This blog is Not Safe for Work. Was i supposed to put that at the top? whoops.

Anyway – I got some awesome mail from Mr.Billy Bob Tweed today –  he went out and took some shots of the knitting around KW. Here’s a couple:

SO AMAZING.

Wanna go see them yourself? Here’s the directions that came with the email:

This installation has been growing incrementally for the past couple weeks, and could still be in-progress.

It’s located behind ‘Ish & Chips, close to the Jane Bond/Starlight Club rear entrances, in the parking lot at the rear of the old Waterloo Post Office, now Perimeter Institute adjunct.

I don’t think it’s visible from the street, but once you walk into that space you can’t miss it. Access either from A) Dupont St. West, across street from the police station; B) the alley on King Street next to Mom’s Tattoo Shop; or C) Princess Street West, the Jane Bond driveway.

Thanks for sending BBT.

Cinematheque Waterloo presents the launch of Russell Kilbourn’s just-published book, Cinema, Memory, Modernity: The Representation of Memory from Art Film to Transnational Cinema (Routledge 2010)

Date: Friday July 16
Location: GenX Video and Media (10 Regina St. N., at Princess)
Time: 7:00 pm
There will be a reading from the book, accompanied by refreshments courtesy of Seven Shores Café.

What’s it about?
Cinema, Memory, Modernity offers a comparative theorization of the representation of memory in the post-war international art cinema (and its contemporary analogues) over-against mainstream Hollywood within an increasingly transnational context of production and reception. Placing specific examples of European, North and South American, and Asian films into dialogue, Kilbourn reads contemporary cinema as providing the viewer with not only the content and form of memory, but also with its own directions for use: film as an ‘art of memory’ for the twentieth-century and beyond.

The City of Waterloo has received a grant to install a secure bicycle-parking facility and to produce a map outlining local bikeways… they’re looking for public input, so fill out this short online survey.

The city is hoping to work on these parking structures in fall of 2010.

Good Stuff! Now we just need a bike borrowing system like Montreal and we’ll be good to go!

Tomorrow at 5pm, the Tri-City Roller Girls are giving a Roller Derby Demo at the Waterloo Concrete Slab – aka the Public Square.

You should check it out! These chicks fucking rule.

The Starbucks inside Chapters in Waterloo was closed for a little bit for renovations.

It’s open again, and pretty nice inside… the ordering area is bigger and there’s more room for lining up and looking at all the delicious pastry-ness.

I heard that all the wood is made from trees that had fallen due to natural causes. lol. ie. no trees were harmed during the making of this yuppy facility.

They even have a pretty nice wood “community table” – Matter of Taste must be threatening them!

Just thought i’d share. I know, all my posts are about food lately. Deal with it.

PS. It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday you selfish bastard. Do something nice for her.

Last night, after recording this week’s episode of The 100 – we got into a pretty interesting little chat about the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery…

Brock makes an interesting point that clay and glass is probably the most accessible art form in today’s society (not sure the I totally agree with that… i think that music or moving pictures are a little easier for people to relate to…  but in terms of physical work… ok) and yet, I still have not set foot in the gallery once.

Why is this? I really have NO clue… i know it’s free on weekdays between 5 – 6… I know there is parking behind the building, I have heard from tons of people they have a wicked giftshop – but still nothing. Hmmmmm.

Anyways, enough about me not being a proper patron of the arts – more about you -

If you’re interested in the gallery, what it is, what it could be… you should check out the open meeting tonight at RIM park where they are going to present their Sustainability Plan that is going to council.

Registration at 6:15;  Meeting from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm.

Everyone is welcome.

(If you can’t make it, but you still want to weigh in: Answer this ”In your view, what are the three most important services the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery should provide to the community in the future?” and email it to info@canadianclayandglass.ca)

I would like to report that interesting things have been going on with me lately, like I’ve had my house ransacked by the police, or I started a worldwide phenom of baring cleavage in the name of women’s rights – but sadly, I had a pretty chill weekend.

I DID get out to the Kegger for Cancer though – good time as always! And did some very cosmic bowling on Friday night. Excellent.

Tonight, you may want to check out this really interesting seminar at Seven Shores Cafe:

“Protecting the Mountain Gorilla”

7pm – Seven Shores – FREE

I’ll be recording this weeks episode of The 100. So if you go – lemme know!

If you’re into something, you should think about giving an Ignite talk about it!

You can talk about anything really, you just can’t be pitching a business.. or be too preachy… that gets to be a little annoying even for just 5 minutes.

The favourite talks i’ve heard at past events were about HOW TO something… but that’s just me.

So if you want to get off the bench and give it a go – but that makes you nervous or confused, you should check out this workshop being held on:

Wednesday, April 28

7-9pm at the second floor of the Huether – aka barleyworks.

It’s Free – but you need to register HERE.

Or, if you want more info, you could take a tour of the great looking Ignite Waterloo site.

I’ve gotta say, this is a great place to go to pick up a gift for someone… or for yourself. I went for the first time 2 years ago, because we were looking for a little tea set like you find in sushi joints.

We found this great little set with 4 cups and a little box they sit in, for like $40:

(there’s 4 cups but one is upstairs and i’m too lazy to go and get it)

Things are affordable, made by local potters and super beautiful. The show runs from today (Friday the 23rd) to Sunday at the Waterloo Rec Centre.

All the details, including hours and a map,  can be found HERE.

I’m almost positive you’ve heard that the University Plaza section with Sugar Mountain and Mel’s Diner had a massive fire this morning.

It’s so tragic, I don’t even know what to write.

The blaze looks huge, you can check out photos and some other people’s thoughts by checking out THIS search  on Twitter (where Mels is a trending topic in Canada):

Roads are closed around the plaza, so stay away.

As I’ve mentioned, I attended this event put on by the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre a few years ago  - and it was really interesting.

Met lots of great people – which was definitely the highlight. Here’s the lowdown on this Saturday’s event… it’s not too late to register – and check out ALL the familiar faces that’ll be presenting some great sessions. If you do something creative – and hope to sell it/make money/apply for grants/have anyone hear about it – you should spend the $49 to check this out:

You can register HERE.

I’m sure by now, you’ve heard that 2 chicks kissed in Cafe 188whatever and were kicked out by the infamous owner, Sonia Adlys. No Joke.

If you haven’t… you can read the article that ran in the Record today.

First of all – that chick Adlys is whacked.  The Article above asks if people are trying to defame her character or whatever, and to that… I say that I have had several personal run-ins with her in her restie… once when i shamefully asked if they had a veggie burger option and was told i should “just get the veggie sandwich, do i SEE a veggie burger on the menu????” I was just asking, sheesh…  In most cases, i would be pretty skeptical of how this recent debacle went down – but I personally know one of the kissers  involved, and trust her recount of the story as she is a totally great, and honest,  young woman. What does kind of sketch me out, is the fact that the facebook group wasn’t started by the two women involved… and i am hoping to ask Jenny about that next week when we chat.

Secondly – i am not even  going to go into how ridiculous it is that 2 women would be kicked out of a cafe in Ontario. Saying that, i have a feeling that Adlys would be jonesing to kick out a couple that was of two different ethnic backgrounds, for kissing too… so…. i think you know where i’m going with that…. But i’m also going to say that this Region has some seriously hateful undertones… I just heard from a friend that a few of her students who are from Somalia and male, were recently not picked up by the bus… for no other reason than how they looked. Yep, seriously.

Thirdly – If you want more info on this… or you want to join the facebook group “taking action against homophobia in waterloo region” you can go HERE.

The facebook group reports there will be a kiss-in on Saturday April 10th at 2pm at the Cafe.

There was talk about a boycott – but i don’t think there’s a need to have an organized one personally. You and I are consumers… choose to vote with every dollar you spend AL THE TIME. Interestingly though – a similar situation happened in Ottawa in 2007… and the restaurant shut down shortly after giving an apology to the gay couple that was discriminated against.

PS. Thanks to Mike for giving me the heads up on this.

PPS. Please weigh in if you’ve got a comment…

You heard it here first:

Theatre on the Edge is the best way to spend $5 in the Waterloo Region.

Every Thursday night, The Button Factory, 8pm till about 9:30ish.

What to expect?

Well, you get there a couple minutes before 8, pay your $5 and get your “Frequent Fun Card” stamped… 5th show is free i believe.

You find a seat and wait for the host (this person is a part of TOTE and rotates every week) they give you a quick rundown on how the show works, and then the 5 players for the night come out and get introduced.

Each skit is about 5 mins and the host will ask for key information from the audience to incorporate into each act.

For example: Name a Profession, something you would get for your birthday, a room in the house or a make-believe theme of a ballet.

I literally laughed for 2 hours straight. How great is that?

Suck it Reality TV.

There’s tons of free parking across the street, there’s snacks for $1 each at intermission and some mix and mingle time with the welcoming cast. You can get involved with the show, or just sit back and enjoy. I of course HAD to make an ass of myself in the second half. LOL. But i received a 5 free admissions ticket as reward … so let me know if you wanna go!

i got a special shoutout for keeping this position in heels. hahahaha.

Thanks for the photos @cutegecko and @cutergecko! There may be some video posted in a bit.

It’s been a busy week – very much looking forward to chilling out a bit this weekend and doing a whole lot of nothing organized.

If you have never heard of Peter Katz or Jadea Kelly – you should probably give’em a listen on myspace. Definitely worth checking out. I hadn’t heard of them till a couple weeks ago when Ramy mentioned he was Peter’s biggest fan.

Emily R and I checked them out on Wednesday night at Maxwell’s and it was soooo great.

Here’s Jadea doing a cover of Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” complete with chorus sing-a-long. Amazing.

Here’s Peter Katz doing his thing.

Both extremely witty, talented, comfortable, genuine and super earnest Canadian individuals, who warm the ice cold cockles of my heart.

Thanks for the reco and the photos Ramy.

PS. Did you know that you can stream some local and semi-local music in the foooter of this blog? Bet you didn’t… but now you do.

Karl from Cute Gecko has organized the gang hitting up Theatre on the Edge tomorrow after cinq a sept!

Looks like a crazy cast of characters at this little Improv show that happens every Thursday in Uptown.

Starts at 8pm. $5 to get in.

If you wanna come with us, drop me a note!

A friend recently introduced me to the music of Peter Katz – a singer songwriter from Toronto, and i am quite taken with him. Sings about doing what you love, and other people’s stories of life. He just seems so sweet and lovely – and talented. So you should probably come out to Maxwell’s in Waterloo on Wednesday to see him.

Doors @ 8:30, opener (who is apparently also great) at 9:00, Peter on 9:45 ish. Tix are $7.

Thought I would end the week with some photos.
St.Patrick’s Day at McMullan’s in uptown. Bit of a gongness, Bit of awesome.

This tiara says “Irish Princess” – hahahahaha… I’m about as Irish as the Pipeband and Highland Dancers featured below.

Great night out! If ONLY we would have left at 12:30am like everyone else. hahaha.
Thanks for the pics Ramy!

PS> Have a GREAT weekend! Talk to you guys Monday!
